I doubt the over-a-million hits on youtube for this video isn’t because of WHO singer/DJ/fashion-buff, Solange is, but more off the strength of the song, “Losing You” itself n’ more importantly, the incredible display of stylings, color n’ theatrics these Africans display around Solange throughout the video. Directed by Melina Matsoukas, a behind-the-camera star in her own right, creates a trendsetter-pace here. The fashion world’s salivating, while the music world’s on the edge of their headphones! Set in a South African township it seems, probably Soweto, Solange invades the village n’ immediately becomes surrounded by fiercely-dressed lads in tailor-made suits, properly mimicking the practices of the Brits, their ex-colonialists. No doubt, some won’t get this video. I actually invite bewilderment on its purpose. Haters! But, the very purposelessness of how this is shot, merely to display a vibe w/nuff style, is the main objective, n’ quite frankly, it works pretty damn well. It’s the 21st century version of Janet’s classic. And ya think Beyoncé’s taking major notes? Oh best believe, MAJORLY!
